This page states plainly what ConstrCalc does, what it does not do, and where the boundary of its usefulness sits. Estimating carries real commercial risk, and a tool that overstates its own authority does its users a disservice.
ConstrCalc performs arithmetic on figures you supply. It does not read your drawings, inspect your site, know your local market, or form a professional opinion about whether your inputs are sensible.
If you enter a cement quantity that is ten times too large, the platform will multiply it by your unit rate and present the result without objection. That is the correct behaviour for a transparent calculator — it never silently overrides you — but it means the responsibility for input sanity remains with the estimator.
Actual construction costs vary with design, structural system, specification, local codes, site conditions, ground conditions, access, season, supplier pricing, exchange rates, labour availability and wastage. Two buildings of identical floor area can differ in final cost by a factor of three once these are accounted for.
Any figure produced here is a structured calculation of your assumptions, not a prediction of what a project will cost. It is a starting point for a priced bid, never a substitute for one.
The standard material consumption figures reflect conventional reinforced-concrete residential construction and are published in full on the Sources page. They exist so you can sanity-check an order of magnitude in seconds — a cement order ten times too large is obvious against a known norm.
They are not a bill of quantities. Light timber framing, steel framing, and unusual specifications diverge sharply from these baselines. Once working drawings exist, a measured take-off supersedes any published average, and the drawings win.
Using this platform does not create an engineering, surveying, architectural, legal, financial or advisory relationship between you and ConstrCalc. We are not your engineer of record, your quantity surveyor, or your cost consultant, and nothing on this site should be presented to a client as certified professional advice.
For projects carrying structural, safety, statutory or significant contractual risk, engage a qualified professional licensed in the relevant jurisdiction. That is not a formality; it is how buildings stay standing and how disputes are avoided.
Building codes, permit regimes, retention practices, tax treatments and safety requirements differ by country, state, province and municipality, and they change. Country references on this site describe general conventions to help you know what questions to ask in an unfamiliar market.
They are not legal advice and are not a substitute for confirming the current position with the authority having jurisdiction over your specific site. Municipal rules frequently override national defaults, and the exception usually applies to somebody.
Currency figures use fixed reference rates for display convenience and are not live market rates. Do not treat a converted figure as a basis for a contractual sum or a payment without confirming the applicable rate with your bank.
Unit conversions between imperial and metric use internationally accepted constants and are exact. Conversions involving density or bulking — volume to weight for aggregate, for instance — depend on assumptions about the material that you should state explicitly in your own records.
The platform is provided as-is, without warranty of uninterrupted availability. Calculator data is stored in your browser rather than on our servers, which protects your commercial confidentiality but also means we cannot recover work you lose. Export anything important.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, ConstrCalc accepts no liability for commercial loss arising from reliance on its output or reference material, including underpriced bids, omitted cost categories, or reference figures that have since changed. Where local law does not permit exclusion of certain liabilities, those liabilities are not excluded.
If you believe a calculation is wrong or a reference figure is inaccurate, tell us at info@constrcalc.com. Substantive corrections are published with a dated note. We would rather be told than leave an error in place.
Several cost drivers are invisible to any calculator, and they are frequently the ones that decide whether a job is profitable. Ground conditions discovered after excavation begins; access constraints on a restricted urban site; a client who revises the specification after the frame is up; weather that halts wet trades for a fortnight; a supplier who withdraws a quoted rate.
None of these appear in a quantity multiplied by a rate. They are the reason contingency exists as a visible, disclosed line in this platform rather than something folded quietly into inflated unit rates. Sizing that contingency is a judgement about the specific project, and it is yours to make.
Derived rates such as cost per square foot or cost per floor are comparison aids, useful for checking a detailed estimate against completed projects of similar type and specification. They are not pricing methods.
If your measured build-up produces a rate far outside the local range for comparable work, treat that as a prompt to re-examine the estimate — not as a reason to overwrite it with the benchmark. The build-up knows about your project; the benchmark does not.
