  • What it does: applies standard per-1,000 ft² consumption figures to the area you enter, then multiplies by your own unit rates to produce a material cost.

Where do the standard quantities come from?

They reflect conventional reinforced-concrete residential norms, published in full on our Sources page. They are a starting point for a sanity check, not a substitute for a measured take-off from drawings.

My structure uses a different method — are these figures still valid?

Only partly. Light timber-frame construction, for example, uses far less cement and brick. Change the region setting, then overwrite the consumption figures with values that match your specification.

Should I add a wastage allowance?

Yes. Breakage, off-cuts, and over-mixing are real. Many estimators add 3–5% on bulk materials and up to 10% on bricks and tiles. Enter it in the quantity so it stays visible.

Why can I edit every pre-filled number?

Because your supplier quote beats any published average. The defaults exist to speed you up, never to override what you know about your own market.

Should I price labor by the hour or by the day?

Use hourly when your crew records time or overtime affects margin. Use daily when workers are paid a fixed day-rate or you subcontract per day. Both resolve to the same underlying formula.

What is the daily-rate equivalent shown beside my hourly input?

It is a reference figure — your hourly rate across a standard shift — so you can compare a quoted day-rate against your own build-up. It is never applied to the total on top of the hourly cost.

Should my rate include more than the wage?

It should. A burdened rate adds payroll taxes, insurance, statutory benefits, and often small tools. Pricing on the bare wage understates what the crew actually costs you.

How do I handle productivity differences between crews?

Adjust the hours, not the rate. Estimate the crew-hours the task genuinely needs, then apply the rate. That keeps “how long” and “how much” separate and easier to defend.

Should I include operator cost here or under Labor?

Pick one and stay consistent across the estimate. If your hire rate is “wet” (operator included), keep it here. If it is “dry”, price the operator in the Labor tab so the crew total stays accurate.

How do I handle equipment I already own?

Charge an internal hire rate that reflects depreciation, maintenance, and fuel. Entering zero hides a genuine cost and quietly inflates your apparent margin.

What about mobilisation and delivery charges?

Add them as separate items. They are one-off costs that do not scale with hire duration, so folding them into a daily rate distorts longer hires.

Does idle time need to be priced?

Usually yes. Hire is typically charged by calendar period rather than hours worked, so weather days and sequencing gaps still cost money. Price the hire period, not just the productive days.

Why is my total higher than subtotal plus a flat percentage?

Because overhead and profit compound rather than add. Overhead is applied to the subtotal, then profit is applied to the subtotal plus overhead — which is standard estimating practice.

Which export format should I send to a client?

PDF for a proposal you want presented exactly as designed. Excel when the recipient needs to work with the numbers. Keep a JSON snapshot for yourself so revisions never mean retyping.

What does cost per unit area actually tell me?

It is a comparison rate, useful for benchmarking against past projects of similar type and specification. It is not a pricing method — two buildings of equal area can differ enormously in cost.

Does the calculator ever adjust my figures?

No. Every number here is derived from values you entered, using published formulas. Nothing is estimated, inferred, or silently corrected on your behalf.
